As a stylist for Armani, Benita Elmedia helps others discover their style. In her own life as blogger Surge of Style, she’s all about taking fashion risks, one innovative outfit at a time. Prepare to meet this fashion force to be reckoned with.

Introduce yourself, your personal style and describe a typical day for you

My name is Benita, aka Surge of Style. I would say my style is chic, versatile and innovative as I love trying different things and I believe fashion is all about taking risks. My typical day isn’t always the same. Sometimes I’m at work styling clients, or shooting new outfits for my Instagram, or doing freelance ecommerce and runway styling for various brands. It’s all very exciting.

Why did you choose the name Surge of Style??

Surge is a powerful force of something, and my page consists of images of my personal style, so I coined it together to mean “a powerful force of style”.

You’re a stylist at Armani. What does a typical work day involve? What do you love about being a stylist?

It normally involves styling clients and doing my very best to make them feel happy and comfortable in what I pick out for them. Fashion is my utmost passion. I love that I can do my hobby as a job. Styling is very rewarding as I build great relationships and make clients feel good about themselves through the right clothing. I’m also surrounded by an atmosphere of creative people and beautiful clothes, and I learn every day and improve my fashion knowledge.

Who is your favorite fashion designer and why? Where do you love to go shopping?

My favourite fashion designer is Alessandro Michele who designs for Gucci. His style is bold, innovative and flamboyant, and I live for that. My favourite places to go shopping are Zara, ASOS and vintage stores to find hidden gems.

In a recent post you mentioned visiting home in Nigeria. What do you love about African art and fashion?

Nigeria is so awesome. We have such an expressive culture, especially when it comes to fashion. I love the colours, shapes, patterns, fabric, and the history that comes with it, like the Dashiki [a brightly coloured shirt or tunic from West Africa] for example. I find that the clothing always puts me in such a good mood, even though the weather might be hot that day. There is so much African influence around the world globally, even Western fashion has started to incorporate African-inspired ideas onto the fashion runway.

What is your main source of inspiration when it comes to staying up to date with the latest fashion trends?

I love looking for fashion inspiration on platforms like Instagram, Pinterest, and Browzzin. I also read fashion magazines and blogs.

General words of wisdom you live by?

You must be the change you wish to see in the world.
